What Is Christmas?

Christmas is a holiday that falls on December 25, the same day as the winter solstice, when the days start getting longer. As you might guess from its name containing the word "Christ," it is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of the Biblical figure Jesus Christ. However, people both religious and not celebrate by having get-togethers, enjoying Christmas dinner, and giving each other gifts. Grab some deals and spread the joyful winter cheer!

History of Christmas

Christmas has been celebrated for centuries by people around the world to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is also a public holiday in many nations. Although it occurs on December 25 on the Gregorian calendar, Jesus' birthday is unknown, so the Roman Catholic Church fixed the date in the early fourth century. The spirit of the holiday is more key than knowing Jesus' exact birthday. It is the same date as the winter solstice when the sun's path is farthest south in the Northern hemisphere. The symbolism is also key, with the sun's activity as a type of birth corresponding to the three magi who followed a star leading them to the baby Jesus to bring gifts to him.

What People Enjoy About Christmas

Among the reasons why people enjoy Christmas is because it happens during the winter, and many people enjoy the cold season for bringing together people and enjoying comfort foods and drinks. Another reason is because of the unique emotions the holiday stirs in people, like spreading good cheer and engaging in charity.

How Can You Celebrate Christmas?

There are several different ways to celebrate Christmas, including:

Meals with family: Eating out at a restaurant or ordering food for takeout or delivery are just a few ways to celebrate Christmas dinner without having to cook.

Charity: For engaging in charity, helping the poor and homeless by donating clothes, food and gifts or volunteering at a soup kitchen or a church are a few ways to give back to the community.

Budget-friendly ideas: If you're on a tight budget and are looking for ways to offer gifts to your loved ones, don't worry. Many people enjoy handmade gifts, like art and crafts, or homemade sweets for stocking stuffers. For budget-friendly Christmas dinner, spiced baked ham, sausage-and-apple stuffed pork roast, herb-seasoned chicken, jiffy cornbread, sweet onion and potatoes au gratin, and beefy macaroni-and-cheese casserole are some dishes that are quick and simple to prepare without breaking the bank. If you don't have the money or space for a Christmas tree, miniature LED or USB trees are other possible choices for showing the holiday spirit with a much smaller, yet no less festive, decoration.

DIY activities: When everyone is getting busy and it's difficult to plan ahead, you want to make do with what you have. All it takes for do-it-yourself activities is choosing something fun for friends and family. For the whole family, they might enjoy making Christmas trees out of popsicle sticks and gems, cookie cutting to make cookie ornaments, paper snowflakes or garlands out of popcorn and cranberries. Making desserts together is also fun.
