The digital world is growing rapidly and constantly evolving. As new technologies emerge, domain name registrations have become increasingly important. When TRABIS officially began operations on September 14, 2022, it opened registration for com.tr, org.tr and net.tr domains without requiring documentation. Now a new phase is beginning: according to recent discussions with TRABIS, .tr domain names will be made available for allocation directly without documentary requirements. Priority will be given to holders of related second-level domains such as .com.tr, .org.tr and k12.tr, and the allocation process has been structured into three clear categories to keep it fast and easy to understand. Below you will find the details of each category, how the allocation will work, and what domain holders should expect.
1. Category: Public Institutions (gov.tr, edu.tr, tsk.tr, bel.tr, pol.tr, k12.tr)
The first priority category includes public institutions and certain organizations that operate in regulated sectors. Holders of gov.tr, edu.tr, tsk.tr, bel.tr, pol.tr and k12.tr domains—both public bodies and eligible private entities operating in the relevant fields—will be given precedence to obtain the corresponding .tr domain. These qualified domain holders will be able to register their .tr domain through any accredited registrar without paying a fee. TRABIS will generate a transfer or application code for the .tr domain and provide that code to the registrar, which will then share it with the domain owner. If multiple institutions claim the same .tr label, priority will be determined in accordance with the rules set out in the Internet Domain Name Regulation, specifically Article 27.
2. Category: Associations, Foundations and Civil Society (.org.tr domain holders)
The second priority group covers associations, foundations, civil society organizations, public bodies and community-focused entities that currently hold .org.tr domains. Once allocations for the first category are completed, eligible .org.tr registrants will be able to secure the matching .tr domain by proving their existing registration. The process is intended to be straightforward: registrants will present documentation of their current .org.tr domain to the registrar and proceed to obtain the corresponding .tr name under the priority allocation rules.
3. Category: Other Extensions (.net.tr, .biz.tr, .gen.tr, .tv.tr, .name.tr) and .com.tr Holders
The third category includes holders of other country-specific second-level domains such as .net.tr, .biz.tr, .gen.tr, .tv.tr and .name.tr, as well as current .com.tr domain owners. After the allocations for categories 1 and 2 are finalized, applicants in this group will be required to use an application code system to request the matching .tr domain. Accredited registrars will distribute application codes to their customers; domain owners will then apply for the .tr domain through any registrar using that code. This staged approach ensures an orderly, transparent allocation while respecting the priority hierarchy.
General Registration
After all priority categories have been processed and eligible institutions and organizations have had the opportunity to claim their .tr equivalents, remaining .tr domains will be released for general registration. At that stage the allocation will follow a first-come, first-served principle: anyone can register an available .tr domain without submitting any documents, provided the name is not reserved or subject to dispute. This general opening aims to broaden access while protecting legitimate priority claims made during the earlier phases.
